turkey etchings

because i have yet to replace the journal i lost/left in portland this summer [i blame portland], and i’m not wont to take photos these days, this was thanksgiving 2008:

- a rust-glowing husky stadium along the twosday shuttle express route [destination: ray’s boathouse]

- a three-hour fancy pants dinner

- a winning lotto scratch ticket

- a failed 6a shopping excursion

- long, barren hours of non-productivity

- one abstract dragon, slayed

- two trips to the airport

- this evening, seattle fog like i’ve never seen it

- a ratcheting up of homesickness. i’ll be ready in 12 days.

Beach House: Used to Be from shoottheplayer on Vimeo.

i first heard this about two months ago, and swooned. still swooning.

where the songs on beach house’s last album were a slow but sweet drag, prompting slow motion noddings of the head, “used to be” has a steady heart beat moving the song forward. it’s cautious, expectant, hopeful [sf C flagged this for me] in content and form.

in an initial evaluation, i projected an unforeseen bad ending for the singer and whomever it is she’s addressing: ‘no, it won’t work out! you’ve both changed too much!’ it’s clear though, by that break in the middle of the song when the guitar recedes, that things are up in the air still. tragedy needn’t happen, just a steady, quiet, ongoing procession.

sharing is caring

carrie brownstein’s blog is lovely. if i were a better musician, a better writer, and a more voracious consumer of music, i’d aim for a brownstein-like blog.

the church-going-related project has stalled. to be continued over the weekend, maybe, the actual writing to start soon, hopefully.

friends have lately been calling attention to my knack for not paying attention to or just flat out ignoring lyrics. it’s true. i have a horrible memory for those things, except for the most memorable lines. the problem it seems is simply paying attention to speech — listening. [odd, since i’m usually the listener in the conversation.]

so a new vow, for J and pacnw A: i will listen to lyrics. and to everyone else: i will listen [and remember] when you speak, what you speak of. because sharing is caring, apparently, and i should at least care enough in return to receive and retain.

i want to walk.
